Social Protection of Homeless Children and the elderly

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nyapachuma Memorial Foundation actively supported vulnerable groups in Lusaka, focusing on children, youth, and the elderly who were at heightened risk due to the health crisis and associated socio-economic challenges.

One key initiative was the support for children and youth living on the streets at the Fountain of Hope, made possible with support from the Victoria International Development Education Association (VIDEA) of Canada. The programme provided essential services and resources to street-connected children and youth, ensuring their basic needs were met and helping to protect them from exploitation, abuse, and the heightened vulnerabilities brought on by the pandemic. The initiative aimed not only to provide immediate relief but also to create opportunities for reintegration and empowerment of these young people.

In addition, the foundation extended its efforts to the elderly population through support for social protection at the Matero After-Care Home, in collaboration with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) of the USA. Older adults, particularly those living in care facilities, faced unique challenges during the pandemic, including isolation, limited access to healthcare, and increased risk of infection. This programme focused on safeguarding their health, providing essential supplies, and ensuring their wellbeing during the crisis.

Through these interventions, the Nyapachuma Memorial Foundation demonstrated its commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of society, ensuring that both the young and the elderly received care, support, and protection during one of the most challenging periods in recent history.
